Gebrüder Weiss Switzerland also routes by rail

Consolidated wagons from Altenrhein to Lausanne save 250 truck loads per year

The Gebrüder Weiss Altenrhein location has reorganised consolidated transport to Lausanne: as of 05 February, goods take the fast track to their destination. Come this summer, a second consolidated route will run to Bern, additional connections are planned.

Since early February, Gebrüder Weiss has been shipping roughly eight tons of consolidated goods westward through the country every day via the greener pastures of the railways. ”We definitely wanted to counterbalance ground transport,” emphasised Oskar Kramer, manager of the GW Altenrhein branch, on his office’s commitment to the rails. In essence, this means 250 fewer trucks lumbering over Swiss roads every year.
Apart from the environmental aspect, Kramer stresses the considerable operational advantages: ”We naturally benefit from the trains not being subject to Switzerland’s night driving ban. Plus goods arrive five hours earlier in Lausanne, which of course facilitates delivery.”

Rail transports to expand
Altenrhein already has the necessary terminal infrastructure in place whilst its partnership with the ever-reliable SBB guarantees on-time operations. For reasons such as these, plans are now being formulated to have additional consolidated wagons serve more stations in the near future. ”The Bern connection will be realised this coming summer,” notes Kramer. A later phase will see service starting up to either Basel or Lucerne. Nothing stands in the way of further expanding the rail traffic because ”since we’ve tied into the railway system, we’re able to operate very adaptively.”
