Gebrüder Weiss: moving forward

With the AEO certification (Authorised Economic Operator), the EU is reacting to increased security requirements in the cross-border movement of goods.

GW is fulfilling all customs security conditions in a time of global economic flow. For some years, security aspects in the movement of goods have also become the focus of interest in the coalescent Europe. The AEO customs security certificate of the ‘authorised economic operator’ proves the reliability of companies whose goods lorries cross EU external borders to the customs authorities.

GW is endeavouring to obtain certification at its earliest opportunity and has successfully completed an Austria-wide pilot project which was initiated to this end. With the AEO customs security certificate, the company will henceforth be able to exhibit to its clients a further cachet in the efficient transacting of global goods movements which has a status equivalent to an ISO certificate in the domain of quality or the TAPA certificate in the domain of security.

Pilot project successfully completed
"GW realised early on that it would be extremely important to deal with security measures in international goods transportation in future,” says Thomas Zeillinger, authorised representative at GW with responsibility for customs. Security representatives were appointed in all GW branches as long ago as May during a kick-off seminar in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Finance which is competent for the domain of customs law and customs policy. These security representatives are responsible for the implementation of AEO conditions. "It is not exclusively a question of security in GW warehouses, but in the whole company,” explains Zeillinger. This is why all GW employees and expediters received detailed training in security issues during the pilot project which ran from September to November and the accounting and I.T. systems were also subjected to a detailed security check.

On 1 January 2008, the earliest possible date, GW will submit the proposal for certification to the customs authorities. "We were able to bring the pilot project in Austria to an extremely positive conclusion,” says customs representative Zeillinger. "GW thus fulfils all conditions required to obtain certification as an accredited economic partner."
